Truly Comprehensive Checkups

July 1st, 2010

I’m Dr. Marvin Berlin, and I’d like to show you what a truly comprehensive dental checkup entails.

Studies tell us that dental disease contributes to serious overall health problems, ranging from stroke to dementia. Furthermore, gum disease, oral cancer, tooth infection or damage, and other dental problems may be conservatively treated if found early – during a six-month checkup. I also have the means to help patients overcome teeth grinding, sleep apnea, and TMJ disorder.

At McKinney dentist, a checkup can take 30 minutes to an hour, depending on your oral health and the things you’d like to talk with me about. In addition to a warm reception and excellent services, here’s what you can expect: Read the rest of this entry »

One-Visit Crowns at Your McKinney Dentist

June 15th, 2010

As a busy professional myself, I understand the need for convenience. If you’re like me and most of my patients, you probably have children, work, and commitments – and all of these things cut into the time you have for yourself… to take good care of yourself. When I heard about in-office CAD/CAM technology for milling and placing custom porcelain dental crowns in one visit, I had to learn more.

In the past, you know, crowns required two dental visits at minimum. You’d wear a temporary while a lab fabricated a permanent crown. That temporary may crack or fall out, in which case you’d have to rush to the dentist’s office for help.

After trying out E4D, the one-visit or one-hour crown technology, I was hooked. This amazing technology is extremely precise. Three-dimensional imaging software allows me to customize a crown that will fit perfectly in a patient’s bite. Once the plan is generated, the computer sends it to a milling unit in our office. From a shade-matched porcelain block, the milling machine sculpts the crown, and it only takes about an hour. Read the rest of this entry »

No More Numb Face for McKinney Dentist Patients

June 4th, 2010

After a dental procedure that requires local anesthetic, you probably want to get right back to work, school, or your day’s agenda. But with a numb face, you feel kind of weird in public. You could drool or try to speak and completely embarrass yourself.

Not any more.

I’m Dr. Berlin, and at my McKinney dental office, we’re using the innovative new drug, OraVerse, to reverse dental numbness quickly and effectively. I love to bring new products – those that are proven to be beneficial – to my patients. OraVerse is just one more way we at McKinney Dentist give patients a comfortable and rewarding visit.

Let me tell you a little bit about OraVerse.

  • Works on appropriate cases for adults and children over six years old
  • Clinical name is phentolamine mesylate
  • The only drug of its kind
  • Injected into numbed tissue, so you won’t feel the stick
  • Works in about an hour, cutting recovery time by approximately 50%
  • Reduces the potential for self harm (biting and chewing cheeks, tongue, etc.)
  • In a study by the manufacturer, 86% of participants said OraVerse improved their experience; 82% would recommend OraVerse to friends and family Read the rest of this entry »

What is a Same-Day Crown?

May 15th, 2010

Dr. Marvin Berlin here, and I want to talk to you about an exciting new technology that has transformed the dental crown procedure. If you had a crown placed just a few years ago, or in many dental offices today, you probably had two appointments. At the first visit, the dentist prepared your tooth, took an impression (with a gummy material that probably made you gag), and then secured a temporary crown to your damaged tooth.

You went home and may have had trouble with that temporary crown falling out or cracking. Many times, a person has to go back to the dentist to have a temporary crown replaced. All of this occurred while a dental lab fabricated your permanent crown.

Once the lab’s restoration was received by the dental office, you had another appointment. The dentist removed your temporary and cemented the permanent crown in place. Let’s just hope it fitted, or it’s back to a temporary while the lab makes a new restoration.

Sheesh. What a process! I understand the frustration of such a lengthy procedure. So I searched high and low for an alternative that would make your life easier. Found it! Read the rest of this entry »

Dental Implants: Transforming Smiles, Improving Lives

May 5th, 2010

It’s Dr. Berlin again! Are you missing teeth? Do you wear dentures that slip and slide, embarrass you in public, and make you long for natural teeth? Today I’d like to talk to you about dental implants, and exciting innovation in dental prosthetics, or tooth replacement. Implants are a lot like natural teeth in that they’re connected to the jawbone. That means they’re extremely stable and reliable.

Depending on your case, I might recommend one or more implants with individual crowns, a few implants to hold a bridge or partial in place, or four implants to secure a denture. Many of my denture patients opt for implants on the lower jaw because it’s the lower denture that tends to be unstable. Implant-retained dentures literally snap onto implant posts, so they’re completely immobile. Read the rest of this entry »

“I Snore. Do I Have Sleep Apnea?”

April 22nd, 2010

This is a common question among patients frustrated by sleepless nights and drowsy days. If you snore, you may or may not have sleep apnea. If you have sleep apnea, you probably snore. Let me explain.

While you sleep, oral structures can relax and partially block your airway. When this happens, your breath vibrates loose tissues as it is forced in and out of the body. Snoring is the sound produced by the vibrations.

Sleep apnea literally means that you stop breathing while you sleep. Instead of partial blockage, relaxed or improperly positioned oral structures completely block your airway. In many cases, sleep apnea sufferers stop breathing for periods of 10 seconds or longer, and this happens repeatedly throughout the night. Read the rest of this entry »
